Veneers are dental restorations used to cover up the front portion of teeth in order to improve esthetics. Veneers can be used to cover discoloured teeth or poorly shaped teeth, hide gaps between teeth and can help improve the esthetics of your smile.
There are two types of veneers:
- Porcelain veneers: Often called "indirect veneers", they are made from ceramic (porcelain) which can provide beautiful, natural-looking and durable restorations. These veneers are made in a dental laboratory from impressions taken of your teeth. A temporary veneer is placed during the time the laboratory is making your veneer, which usually takes about 2 weeks. Once your porcelain veneers are made, they are cemented over your natural teeth.
- Composite resin veneers: These veneers are called "direct veneers" because they are fabricated and applied directly on the tooth and are made from composite resin (white filling material). These types of veneers are less durable than porcelain veneers. Composite veneers can usually be done in one appointment and do not require temporary veneers to be made.
