Regular oral health exams are essential not only to diagnose and treat dental conditions but more importantly, to prevent any oral disease from developing. This way, the dental team can teach you how to maintain a great oral health, preventing problems before they even appear. Also, by visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups, small problems can be detected at a very early stage, making it much simpler, easier and less costly to address now, rather than wait until the issue becomes more difficult to treat.

An oral health exam or "dental check-up", involves the dentist examining all aspects of the oral cavity including the teeth and soft tissues. The dentist examines the health of soft tissues such as the tongue, cheeks and palate and also examines the teeth. A thorough oral exam also includes an oral cancer screening as well as an assessment of the state of the periodontium (the gums and support of the teeth). A dental check-up may also include having dental radiographs so that the dentist can examine the teeth completely.
