Restorations (fillings) are used to treat teeth which have cavities or fractures. When bacteria found in plaque accumulates on a tooth's surface and comes in contact with sugar, the tooth surface can be affected by a cavity. Without treatment, a cavity will become larger and affect the tooth structure and may lead to pain. A cavity is removed and the tooth is cleaned and filled with a restoration which is either silver (amalgam) or, white (composite). After a restoration is placed, it is very important that patients continue to clean their teeth well at home and return for regular check-ups and cleanings to avoid any further cavities.
